hawsepipe's primary aim is to go beyond the superficial embellishments of culture and to understand symbolic systems at play within the American Merchant Marine through examination and presentation of personal objects used by merchant seamen during the Second World War. With this in mind, a vital part of American history and culture shall be presented in an attempt to contribute to the overall knowledge of a relatively overlooked subject.
